International Roadcheck 2024 Results

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck for 2024 was from May 14th to the 16th. Now the CVSA has tallied up the results to tell us what truckers in North America need to focus on more.

Here are some fun facts from the 2024 International Roadcheck:

• During the 72 hours, officials inspected 48,761 vehicles in total. That comes out to an average of approximately 11 per minute.
• 9,345 of those vehicles failed inspection and were placed out of service, a 19.16% rate.
• The total number of violations? 13,567, meaning the average failures for an out-of-service truck was 1.45.
• The most common violation was the Defective Service Brakes violation, meaning that more than 20% of brakes on a vehicle were too worn out or adjusted improperly, where the remaining 79% or less could not slow down the vehicle properly. At 3,387 violations, 25% of all violations were because of defective brakes.
• 17,395 total vehicles had no problems whatsoever, getting a CVSA sticker to show the road that their machine is in tip-top shape.
• Besides Defective Service Brakes, common violations were Tires, Other Brake Violations, Lights, and Cargo Securement.

The biggest takeaway from the data? Keep those brakes in check! Just as important as getting the vehicle moving is being able to stop the vehicle in a timely manner.

Conclusion

So how did the results compare to those of the year prior? The number of vehicles inspected was only 80% of what it was in 2023, but the number of violations on an out-of-service vehicle dropped approximately seven percent, which scales independently from the number of total inspections done. Additionally, the out-of-service rate stayed mostly the same, comparing 18.7% to 19.16%.

When we first wrote our prediction for when International Roadcheck 2024 would happen, we said May, which turned out to be correct. It is not much of a leap in logic to assume that International Roadcheck 2025 will follow this tradition and happen in the fifth month of the year, with the results coming a handful of months later.
