International Roadcheck 2023 Results
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck 2023 has come and gone during the May 16th-18th. This is what they found.
Results
- In total, almost 60,000 vehicles were inspected in the three days. That is roughly the same that it was last year, at approximately thirteen per minute.
- 116,669 violations were found, meaning on average every inspection yielded at least two violations, regardless if they were violations large enough to warrant an out-of-service order or not.
- Of the 116,669 violations, 17,479 were out-of-service vehicle violations, applying to 11,270 commercial motor vehicles.
- 3,256 drivers were found to have 5,280 driver out-of-service violations. Both forms of out-of-service violations show that they are relatively rare for a particular truck or individual (19% and 5.5%, respectively), but that if one is found, another may just be on the same person or vehicle.Â
- For out-of-service orders in the United States, the top five reasons were Brake System (25.4%), Tires (19%), Defective Service Brakes (14%), Cargo Securement (12.4%), and Lights (11.4%).
- When it comes to driver violations, the top five were Hours of Service (39.4%), False Logs (27.4%), Other (9.5%), Canceled or Revoked License (8.2%), and No Medical Card (4.8%).
- Hazardous materials and dangerous goods vehicles were also inspected, 2,853 total, with 236 out-of-service violations.
- As per usual, Mexico had the fewest number of inspections while the U.S. held the majority. While the United States had 53,847 inspections and Canada had 4,247, Mexico had a meager 1,335.
Conclusion
If you are interested in comparing this year’s data to that of the year prior, we also have an article about the 2022 International Roadcheck. One of the most interesting changes from last year is that the percentage of driver out-of-service violations being False Logs was almost halved.
As of the current time of writing there is no information as to when the next International Roadcheck will occur, but if it is anything like the past two years, International Roadcheck 2024 will be in the middle of May.
