Indiana City to Ticket Truckers Parked on Interstate Ramps
We know that truckers today have a hard time finding proper parking. By now you have probably heard the statistic: 10 trucks for every parking spot available. This leads some truckers to park in “creative” places, such as freeway ramps. Not only is this illegal, but it is dangerous, and in an attempt to save lives while also getting some local government revenue, the city of Greenwood, Indiana is going to start heavily enforcing parking violations.

Truckers who park on either on-ramps or off-ramps within city limits of Greenwood may find themselves waking up to a $150 ticket moving forward.
This news is the most recent in a string of cities using “the hard way” to have truckers stop parking illegally, perhaps starting in the middle of 2021 with Minneapolis.
Greenwood Police Officer Jason Grable says it is in the interest of safety that the police department is ramping up its enforcement of this law. “As of tomorrow morning, citations will be issued and it’s going to be hitting their pocketbooks. At night especially, if they’re not well illuminated, vehicles can run into them. If someone’s not paying attention, then we have a real problem.”
Conclusion
The only way we can realistically agree with the city of Greenwood’s decision on this is if they were to use the citation money to fund and build a proper truck parking station, as truckers park on these freeway ramps not because they enjoy doing so, but because they know that it is unsafe to be driving beyond the standard hours-of-service or whenever they are feeling exhausted and incapable of driving. We predict that this will cause a perverse incentive for truckers to either park in residential areas, or continue driving despite being fatigued and inadvertently increasing the chances of accidents beyond what they would be had the truck stayed stationary on the side of a freeway ramp.
With some forms of government working to alleviate the problem of truck parking (such as Arizona) and others (like Greenwood) fighting only the symptoms, it will be interesting to see how things turn out in the years to come.
