Arizona Unveils Truck Parking Plan

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is well aware of the parking problem that truckers face, and is working on renovating its public rest areas so that it may have more parking spots for commercial vehicles.

The current plan is to spend $32 million in funding received from the National Highway Freight Program on three locations that are in most desperate need of additional parking, as determined by capacity and nearby illegal truck parking. Those three areas are:

• Meteor Crater Rest Area (140 spaces added).
• B-10/SR186 TI Safe Lot (127).
• Burnt Well Rest Area (103).

This means $86,486 per parking spot that is expected to be used a minimum of 23 hours every day. Provided that ADOT receives more funding and stretches its dollars far enough, it hopes to add 846 spaces to ten different areas in total. The other locations planned for the future include:

• Crazy Creek Safe Lot (176).
• San Simon Rest Area (80).
• Seligman Safe Lot (72).
• Bouse Wash Rest Area (55).
• Ehrenberg Rest Area (51).
• Sacaton Rest Area (20).
• Mohawk Rest Area (16).

These locations are located upon I-10 and I-40, which span from West Coast to East Coast, as well as I-8, which gets very close to the Mexican border.
