Lower Manhattan to Charge for Truck Entry
Blasted supply and demand economics strikes again! The New York Traffic Mobility Review Board has come up with a plan that will charge vehicles money to enter lower Manhattan, the most densely populated area in the United States and is cramped even with no vehicles in it, in a plan to both reduce congestion in the area and obtain additional revenue.
Details
Big, heavy trucks are going to be charged $36 if they travel south of 60th street, more than double the price of the typical four-wheel passenger vehicle. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected to vote on the implementation of a toll after a series of public hearings in February.
One of the proposed inclusions for the toll plan is a reduced-traffic discount, offering drivers a 75% discount if they enter from 9 P.M. to 5 A.M.. This creates an incentive for trucking companies to plan any deliveries to southern Manhattan late into the night and early in the morning.
Members of the United States Congress who represent districts close to Lower Manhattan have voiced their concerns over how much good this fee implementation is really going to do for the populace.
“Trucks depending on their size will have to pay up to $36 per-day,” said Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey. “That means delivery trucks bringing goods and supplies to small businesses will be whacked. That cost will be passed down to the small business owners and their customers.”
Conclusion
We know that state and local governments have been implementing ways for those in a hurry to be able to use express lanes if they are willing to cough up the extra cash, but we are of the opinion that an extra $36 per delivery may be too much to justify going there. While it will be a minor inconvenience to fleets who seldom deliver there, companies who primarily do business in New York City are going to find themselves handing over hundreds if not thousands of dollars per truck every single year. We expect the trucking industry and how it delivers to lower Manhattan to change drastically should the vote pass and this toll system becomes implemented.
