FMCSA to Give $44 Million to State CDL Programs
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, as a part of last year’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, is giving away $44 million in grants to different state CDL training programs. If you are a fleet hoping to get more drivers in your trucks, here is what you need to know.

“FMCSA’s core mission is safety, and we’re proud to make investments that support the U.S. Department of Transportation’s ambitious goal of zero fatalities on our roadways,” FMCSA Deputy Administrator Robin Hutcheson said. “The grants we are announcing today are an important tool for reducing large truck crashes and supporting critical safety programs in every state.”
The funding is through the Commercial Driver’s License Implementation Program, a series of steps that states can go through to get money to provide more safety on the roads. The most notable example of this is better quality driver training.
This year’s budget, $44 million, is a 71% increase from last year’s expenditure and an increase of almost 50% over the listed budget in 2014.
This funding is part of the general plan of the United States federal government to ease strain on the supply chain by having more truckers on the road, while not compromising safety as a direct result.

The efforts on behalf of the United States federal government appear to be working, as trucking jobs are currently at an all-time high, have been increasing for numerous months in a row, and show no sign of slowing down.
Roughly 60% of the FMCSA’s spending goes to state and local governments to help provide safety enforcement and regulation on the smaller governmental levels. While many of the processes that the FMCSA performs may provide a hinder to the trucking industry in terms of jobs in the name of keeping the streets safer, such as the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse having high standards to have those caught put back on the road, but this move will both increase safety and increase the size of the trucking industry, effectively killing two birds with one stone.
