FMCSA Removes Six More ELDs From List
Just a little more than a month after the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced the revocation of three types of Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), they are announcing six more onto the chopping block.
Details
The six ELD models (and their identifiers) in question are:
- BlueStar ELD (BSE777).
- Roadstar Solutions (RSAA01).
- United Eld (UEI002).
- Speed ELD (SP33D3).
- TrackEnsure ELD (TE0101).
- TrackEnsure ELD (TE0101).
Just so that it is clear, there are two versions of TrackEnsure ELD that have the same name and identifier, and both of them are being removed from the list, meaning that if a member of your fleet has one of these ELDs, there is a 100% chance that it is now disallowed.
The rules are similar to what they are for the previous three ELDs: drivers can use paper logs for sixty days after the announcement as a grace period, but must replace the ELD with a different one approved by the FMCSA. The announcement happened January 8th, so the due date is March 8th. Drivers using one of these six ELDs or paper logs on March 9th will be fined as if they were driving without one at all.
Conclusion
Once again, we would like to advocate for the FMCSA changing their system of ELD approval to be for a set time rather than removing them as the need arises. This would give a trucking fleet confidence that the ELD they are using will have a useful life, and would prevent a scenario such as a fleet changing from a Keep Tracking to a Speed ELD, only to find out that they need to change ELDs yet another time. Doing these changes rapidly, combined with the sheer number of trucking fleets in the United States, means that there is bound to be at least one business that picked one of these 18 combinations of a double whammy.
Our advice to you if you find yourself with a revoked ELD is to use paper logs as long as you can before switching, so as to reduce the chances of receiving a one-two punch of disallowed ELDs. If you were using an RTPS47 before and are waiting until January 17th, you may have just avoided some unnecessary drama. Likewise, the list of approved ELDs may continue to shrink between now and March 9th.
