Frigid Weather Brings States of Emergencies
It is a story you have likely heard several times before: the weather outside is frightful. Here are the states that are offering drivers some exemptions to help make the slow season a little faster, and a little warmer.
Kansas
Those delivering propane and other forms of fuel are exempt from Title 49 CFR 390-399 until January 18th, 2025 due to wind chills below zero degrees fahrenheit.
Kentucky
Kentucky is suspending hours-of-service regulations (with the standard stipulations such as the ceasing of driving when tired or after delivery when driving outside of the standard range) for those delivering emergency supplies such as blankets and fuels, but also for livestock and crops that will perish when exposed to extreme cold for an extended period time.
Maryland
Maryland does not have anything directly related to truckers in its Declaration, but does mention the rolling out of various emergency preparedness plans, of which the delivery of necessary goods may play a part in the equation.
Missouri
The Declaration for Show Me State is similar to that of Kentucky, but it only applies to specifically listed fuels (propane, natural gas, and heating oil).
Oklahoma
Oklahoma is doing something similar to Missouri, applying hours-of-service exemptions for the delivery of heating fuels. Unlike other states, Oklahoma is keeping it to a three-day window, as opposed to the typical 14-day window allowed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Virginia
With winds reaching up to 50 miles per hour in already freezing conditions, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is giving state agencies such as the Virginia Department of Transportation the authority to roll out their Commonwealth of Virginia Emergency Operations Plans.
West Virginia
Striking a medium between Kentucky and Missouri, West Virginia allows reasonable driving extensions beyond the typical hours-of-service for the delivery of heating fuels, groceries, and “other essential products.”
Conclusion
The slow season of trucking is also the cold season of trucking. It is imperative that if you are delivering to provide relief to any of these states’ citizens that you also provide relief to yourself. Make sure that you read our guide on how to “winterize” your truck, and remember to drive carefully as some sections of the road may be icy.
