Class 8 Truck Sales Streak Ends in September 2021
Trailer sales ended their streak of consistently outperforming the same time last year in June. Growth is never infinite, and as such the truck sales streak, three months later, has finally ended.
September 2021 Numbers
ACT Research pegs the number of Class 8 truck sales at 27,400. FTR pins the sales number at 28,400. This is about a 25% decrease from August 2021 and about a 12% decrease from September 2020.
Don Ake of FTR repeats what he has been saying for many months now, and is finally starting to come true: the supplies needed to make trucks are drying up like spilled water on summer blacktop.
“This is a complicated, bizarre situation that OEMs have never before encountered. There are many orders that were expected to be built in 2021 that cannot be completed due to the severe component shortages, most notedly, semiconductors. The OEMs are unsure when they can build the leftover 2021 orders and any new orders because the parts shortages are now expected to continue well into next year. They can’t schedule production because they don’t know their actual build capacity.”
With demand roaring since June of last year, the trucking industry will no doubt scramble to get as many Class 8 trucks on the road as it can.
Conclusion
Orders for 2022 models are being snapped up like a boar swimming in a Florida swamp. If you are in the market for a new big rig, it is best to act as soon as possible to reserve whatever slot you can. Another alternative may be to head to the used truck market instead, although they are starting to feel the strain of intense demand as well.
All we can really hope for is the component shortages coming to an end so that truck manufacturers can kick production into high gear.
