April 2021: Truck Sales Still Show Strength
For months industry experts have forebode of a truck shortage. A lack of microchips and other parts, plus the occasional worker strike at plants, combined with an increased demand for shipped goods as the country continues to recover from the pandemic suggests that demand exceeds supply means there will eventually be a dearth of trucks.
While that day may eventually come, it certainly did not happen in April, where truck sales remain high.
The Numbers
April 2021 truck sales were technically the worst month in 2021 so far, but at 33,500 (ACT Research) or 34,600 (FTR) units, it is a far cry from the same month last year.
Both ACT and FTR officials estimate truck sales to have a year-over-year increase of almost 700%, an approximately eightfold increase from April 2020. The idea of selling more trucks than in the worst month of the COVID-19 pandemic is predictable, but the number rests above all of the summer months as well.
Conclusion
With April 2021 truck sales taking over for April 2020, the running total for the last 12 months is now 403,000. Depending on how well the industry does in the next few months, it may be able to break the record from 2018 at 500,000. This is, of course, assuming the manufacturers are able to keep up with purchase orders!
