UPS Announces Seasonal Holiday Plans
We wrote earlier about what Amazon and Target were doing to prepare for the holiday season, and how it may affect jobs in the trucking industry as the rising tide lifted some boats. That seems to be the case here, as the United Parcel Service (UPS) announced on September 26th that it will be hiring 100,000 people to help manage increased package demand.

UPS reports that package delivery demand during the holiday season is approximately double what it is on a typical day, so needless to say the desire for increased processing capacity exists at the company.
The jobs include package handlers at their facilities, but also includes an extensive number of delivery positions. Most interesting is the later holiday season, from November 15th to the 26th of December, where UPS will be hiring companies to use their own delivery vehicles to help get the job done. This is where commercial fleets, especially those with delivery vans, can get their foot in the door, and perhaps grow into a bigger relationship driving under the Authority of UPS.
UPS is one of the most prolific logistical companies in the United States, so the fact that they need help to such an extent that they will be asking companies to bring their own delivery vehicle assets speaks volumes to what the upcoming holiday season will entail.

As of the time of writing there is no indication as to what other major delivery companies such as FedEx have in mind in regards to holiday capacity and seasonal employees, but if UPS is going to take such drastic measures in order to meet demand, it is likely that they will follow in UPS’ footsteps.
