Companies Hire Seasonal Employees as Holiday Season Begins
It seems as though every year, the holiday season starts to appear just a little bit earlier. First it was after Thanksgiving with Black Friday, then the holiday season started to creep into October, and now companies are planning for it as early as September. This year it can be traced to September 19th, as on that day retailers announced planned increases in its workforce for the upcoming season.
Details
Both Amazon and Target announced on September 19th their plans to expand seasonal employees across the board, with Amazon saying 250,000 employees and Target 100,000. This includes transportation, such as private fleets and owner-operators driving under the Authority of Amazon and Target, but not in California.
There are no hard numbers as to what percent of these 350,000 jobs will be directly trucking related, but there is no doubt that it will be quite the chunk. After all, as Amazon establishes more warehouses, there will be a need to move products from point A to point B, as you have probably no doubt seen one of their hired trucks on the road, touting that there is a truckload more to Amazon Prime.
In any case this move indicates that both companies are betting on Cyber Monday 2023 topping even the 2022 day, where it was the biggest day for online shopping ever. Whether or not Americans continue to indulge in rampant consumerism yet again has to be seen.
Conclusion
They say rising tides lift all boats, and in the trucking industry, that seems to be the case (though the saying falls flat in terms of trucks–do not overthink it!). More demand for delivered goods, even in the most private firms that do not contract with owner-operators, decreases the amount of available supply of truckers for other companies to pull from, and higher rates and better wages prevail. Plus, as more workers enter the trucking industry, there exists a greater constituency of trucker voters, leading to higher chances that government action will benefit drivers, as we have seen in recent days. What will be interesting to see is what Cyber Monday’s sales for 2023 will be. That day will be November 27th this year; mark your calendars!
