Twin California Ports Show Impressive Volume Gains
The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. In recent memory, the two names are synonymous with a backlog crisis from the end of 2021, but in the past two years the twin ports have increased their processing capabilities to handle more drayage containers than ever before. Of course, the trucking industry benefits immensely from the increase in shipping.
Details
For September 2023, the Port of Los Angeles saw a 5.4% year-over-year increase, handling 748,440 20-foot-equivalent containers compared to 709,873 in September 2022.
“September was another good month, with imports up 14% and exports jumping 55%,” Executive Director of the Port of L.A. Gene Seroka said in a statement. “Exports are trending up, and that’s good news because narrowing the trade gap boosts the U.S. economy. With the long-term dockworker contract in place, we’re seeing more cargo shifting back to Los Angeles. The table is set to scale up as demand increases.”
The Port of Long Beach’s gains were twice that of its companion, managing 829,429 compared to 741,886 in the ninth month of 2022. Mario Cordero, who holds the same position as Seroka but at the Port of Long Beach, holds similar sentiments to his compatriot.
“I am very pleased,” he said. “We’re back to normal in terms of how we operate. So now the supply chain is much better than it was a year ago. We’re looking forward to a moderate rebound in cargo volume through the end of the year.”
This news comes just a bit shy of a month after the announcement of increased investment into the Port of Savannah. It is expected that all of these increases in port activity are going to generate a tide that raises all boats (pun intended), and amp up the trucking industry as well.
Conclusion
With the holiday season slowly but surely inching towards us, it is likely that business activity at ports all across the nation are going to increase in the upcoming months. Every port in the nation is going to have to be working diligently to be able to handle the increased demand, and trucks will have to be right there to meet them.
