Biden Administration Grants $82.6 Million for 46 States
One of the few line items that are generally bipartisan for federal spending is infrastructure, such as roads. It is a good thing that on October 27th, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced spending plans for 46 different states in the nation and Puerto Rico in an effort to increase road safety.
Details
“Whether it’s a dangerous intersection or highway, or a need for better bus and bike lanes, no one can better pinpoint a community’s safety needs than the people who actually live and work there,” says U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “In the past five years, the communities we are awarding these grants to experienced nearly 14,000 roadway deaths. To help change that unacceptable reality, we are proud to deliver this needed funding to help them address their unique safety needs and save lives.”
The new plan, under the banner Safe Streets and Roads for All, provides funding for roughly 235 projects, which you can read about to get surface-level details on the relevant webpage. Some groups receiving funding include:
- Pasadena, California
- Eugene, Oregon.
- Arlington, Texas.
- Tampa, Florida.
- Navajo Division of Transportation, Arizona (receiving the single largest grant of $1.4 million).
- Carson City, Nevada.
- Municipality of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.
The DOT has created a map that shows where in the nation the various projects will take place.
Conclusion
The funding for these Safe Streets and Roads for All comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 a law that authorizes approximately $1.2 trillion in total investment into the United States’ infrastructure.
Beyond the announcement for funding in 235 different projects, the DOT has announced that it will be announcing funding for additional road safety projects come December. In order to match last year’s number of projects funded, December would have to bring with it the announcement of 276 more. We will let you know if anything noteworthy happens at that time.
Finally, if you are curious, the four states that are not obtaining any funding are Alaska, Iowa, North Dakota, and Rhode Island.
