Port of Savannah Hopes to Expand
If the port backlogs of Long Beach and Los Angeles a little under two years ago taught us anything, it is that the nation’s demand for national goods is constantly on the rise. To that end, to be ahead of the curve, The Georgia Port Authority (GPA) has submitted a permitting application to build a cargo container terminal 395-acres large in the center of the Savannah River.
Details
Hutchinson Island is a 2000-acre isle that finds itself in the center of the Savannah River. It connects itself to the rest of society by way of Route 17 and Interstate 16, so truckers would still be able to access this terminal without being waterlogged. Once completed, it is expected to serve 3 million more drayage containers annually, which would be a massive boon for the trucking industry in delivering those containers. In total, the Port of Savannah would increase to 12.5 million containers annually with the addition of the Hutchinson Island Terminal, should the application be approved. For comparison, the Port of Long Beach, one of the two ports stymied in 2021, moves around roughly 10 million containers annually.
Conclusion
Details regarding the project, including the timeframe for how long it would take to complete, are sparse. However, we can see similar projects the GPA has taken and draw parallels. One such project is the renovation of the Ocean Terminal, which started being worked upon in 2019 and is on course to be completed in 2025. Using the same period for Hutchinson Island, we assume it will be done sometime in 2030.
GPA has intense ambitions on expanding the Port of Savannah’s operations, as it predicts there will be a demand for 20 million containers annually by 2050, a substantial increase from the 7.5 million it currently handles as of September 2023. Getting to that number is going to take some creative planning, even beyond the Ocean and Hutchinson Island terminals such as widening the nearby highways to accommodate more truck traffic. If it comes to light, the intermodal business in the Southeast is destined to become an economic powerhouse.
