Trucking Industry Gains Auxiliary Jobs in February 2022
When we report the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) job numbers, we usually do the sum of all jobs in the trucking industry. February was an interesting month that takes a lot more nuance, so prepare for an explanation of what the BLS has to report.
February 2022 Numbers
Comparing apples to apples, the employment counts posted for February 2022 are:
- 1,549,100 for the initial listing of February 2022.
- 1,543,700 for the revised listing of January 2022 (5,500 fewer than first estimated).
- 1,538,900 for the final listing of December 2021 (15,600 more than first estimated, 1,800 less than the second estimate).
But as we mentioned, this is not the entire story for this month. The BLS tracks two different metrics: all employees, and “production and nonsupervisory employees.”
Every industry has additional support roles to help the main people do their jobs. For trucking, this would most likely include accountants, dispatchers, and human resource representatives looking to recruit new drivers.
Comparing the final numbers for December 2021 to the preliminary of January 2022 (nonproduction numbers are always a month behind), the trucking industry dropped from 1,338,500 to 1,320,100 production workers, a loss of 18,400.
The combined facts of total numbers increasing while production workers decreased indicates a surge of supplemental jobs in the trucking industry. Jobs such as truck driver trainers are on the rise!
Conclusion
There are numerous things that this change in number can signify. Perhaps experienced truckers want to work closer from home and instead have taken on a trucking industry job that does not involve driving over four hundred miles in a single day. Another factor may be owner-operators closing up shop due to diesel prices and becoming employed elsewhere, in and outside of the industry, or the current prices of trucks barring entry for newer blood.
Overall this decrease in drivers during a global supply chain shortage means supply shortages may last a little while longer than anticipated. Fingers crossed that we get out of this hectic period soon!
