Trailer Sales Show Growing Pains for April 2022
2022 has been an interesting time for trucking industry assets, as high demand but low supply has everyone scrambling to get their hands on what they can get. ACT Research has the sales numbers for April 2022 net trailer orders.
April 2022 Numbers
ACT Research estimates the sales of trailer orders to be 19,614. While this is a decrease from March, it is a 21% increase over April of last year, when global supply chain shortages have not yet reared their ugly heads.
ACT Research believes that this decrease from April is not a cause for concern. “Despite April’s drop,” Frank Maly of ACT Research said, “OEMs continue to negotiate with fleets and that effort is building a large group of staged/planned orders that are not yet officially posted to the backlog. Once OEMs gain sufficient confidence in their supply chain and labor availability to open 2023 production slots, expect a surge of orders to be ‘officially’ accepted.”
Maly also notes that trailer manufacturers typically do not open the next year backlog until the middle of the year, meaning that we still have some time before we see how quickly 2023 orders fill up and we can have a true reading on the pulse of trailer manufacturing’s health.
Another factor for sales is fleets holding on to equipment longer than they used to. With maintenance being the name of the game for the time being, companies that can afford to not purchase new trailers are more hesitant than ever to order some.

Ultimately, only the manufacturers themselves will know the length of the 2023 backlog once orders begin being taken for them, but we can make an educated guess based on how quickly vacancies disappear.
