The One Big Beautiful Bill’s Implications on Trucking
On July 3rd, 2025, the House and Senate passed the One Big Beautiful Bill, with President Donald Trump signing it on Independence Day. As with every major Bill, it has effects on the trucking industry. Here are two positives, and one negative.
Federal Funding
When it comes to government spending, a lot of it can be seen as a waste of federal taxpayer dollars. When it comes to various trucking projects, however, it can be seen as an investment into the nation’s economy and infrastructure. Already the Department of Transportation has announced a “Pro-Trucker Package” that will apply $275 million to trucking parking across the nation. Using a conservative estimate of $5,000 per spot, that is 55,000 parking spots to relieve pressure in an industry where participants fight tooth and nail to get a decent spot.
Tax Cuts
Owner-Operators and fleet owners alike will continue breathing a sigh of relief, as the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is extended. This includes a higher standard deduction and more state and local tax deductions being applied to federal taxes.
Where Truckers Get the Short Stick
The One Big Beautiful Bill fulfills one of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign promises to remove taxes on overtime, saying that people who put in the extra time deserve to keep the more money they work when their brain feels like mush after putting in so many hours. The only problem is that trucking is still very much excluded from qualifying for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. This was a potential chance for Republicans of Congress and Trump (as the Bill passed very much along party lines) to give the trucking industry an extra bone of support, but they passed up on it.
Conclusion
While the Big Beautiful Bill is a net benefit for truckers across the nation, detractors of the entire package have the major complaint that it simply does not go far enough.
“It’s time for Congress to fix a nearly century-old oversight by passing the bipartisan GOT Truckers Act and ensure truckers are eligible for both overtime pay and the tax relief extended to other blue collar workers,” Todd Spencer of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said, while also supporting other moves such as additional truck parking funding.
