DOT’s Pro-Trucker Package
The trucking industry is all about delivering freight, but this time the Department of Transportation (DOT) has a package of its own to deliver, courtesy of the “Big Beautiful Bill” that was signed into law on July 4th, 2025.
Details
“For too long, Washington, D.C., has made work harder for truckers,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. “That ends today.”
This new package of regulations is to help provide for the American trucker, rather than harm them. Quite ironically, one of the mandates of the new regulations is the reduction of prior regulations, due in part to the 2nd Trump Administration’s policy of eliminating ten regulations for every new one added. About 1,800 words are to be removed from federal regulations regarding commercial transportation, as well as a withdrawal of proposed rulemaking for speed limiters, pushing that debacle back further until a different president decides to take up the reins again.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the “Pro-Trucker Package” is $275 million set aside for additional truck parking. With trucks exceeding viable parking spaces at a rate of about ten to one, additional parking spaces will help make the roads safer and more efficient, as drivers spend less time looking for additional space.
As you could probably expect, the changes to help improve trucking’s quality-of-life has been met with approval from industry representatives.
“OOIDA [Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association] and the 150,000 truckers we proudly represent welcome these transformational actions from President Trump and Secretary Duffy,” OOIDA President and CEO Todd Spencer said. “These steps not only improve the daily lives of truckers across America but also enhance safety for everyone on the road. For years, truckers have urged Washington to address the severe shortage of truck parking, eliminate the dangers posed by a national speed limiter mandate, and give drivers greater control over their hours of service. We thank President Trump and Secretary Duffy for listening to the men and women behind the wheel who keep America’s economy moving.”
Conclusion
Some of the changes will take more time than others to implement: it is entirely possible that parking installations may take longer than four years and may be halted by the next administration (although this is unlikely). However, the speed limiter debate being put on hold is in effect essentially immediately, so drivers do not need to worry about needing that for the next four years or so.
