PACCAR Releases CARB-Compliant Truck
They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and while a heavy-duty truck needing to have this low of a nitrogen oxide (NOx) is debatable, the interesting thing is that the fine folks over at PACCAR have done it.
Details
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is nothing if not extremely vigorous in its application of regulations towards the trucking industry. To that end, one of the regulations recently put forth by CARB, called the Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle Omnibus, involves a reduction to the amount of NOx released by trucks. The regulation was established in 2020 and required specific goals to be met by 2024. For model years 2022 and after, the emissions of NOx had to be a range from .1 to .01 grams per brake horsepower hour (g/bhp-hr), which is a unit of measurement to account for stronger versus weaker engines.
The engine that reaches these specifications are PACCAR’s newest MX-13s, and will be available in Peterbilt 567, 579, and 589 models soon. PACCAR says the leading contributors to being able to meet the new requirements are larger volume mixers and longer catalytic converters.
Conclusion
While pushing ahead for the future is a noble endeavor, it cannot be stated that a lot more progress can be made by phasing out older model engines. While CARB has done this with engines from before 2010, it is arguable that letting standard research and development create better, cleaner engines while frowning upon engines of old would have a much greater effect rather than pushing the envelope, especially considering how these more expensive engines will entice drivers to go with old trucks instead to save money.
