California Pre-2010 Engine Ban Kicks In
Happy New Year everyone! New Year’s day typically entails lots of partying, friends, and the start of new laws because it is convenient.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced an update to a rule regarding the ban of older engines, due to their disproportionate emissions. As of January 1st, it is now illegal to drive with these engines in the state.
Details
The ban is expected to affect 76,000 trucks that are currently on the road that will either need to update their engines or end their useful lives.
CARB plans to indirectly fine fleets that use these older engines: if your truck uses an engine from 2009 or earlier, you will be blocked from registering or renewing your vehicle with the California DMV, causing you to pay fines if you drive a vehicle without registration.
Automatically, CARB will assume that trucks with model years from 2010 and before include these engines. In order to provide evidence that your older truck has a newer engine, you must go through CARB’s Exclusive Vehicle Data Reporting database.
There is also an exemption for driving the truck fewer than 1,000 miles each year, but that is highly unlikely due to the nature of the trucking business.
Time Marches On
The last time CARB updated this rule to ban engines of specific years was 2014, when they banned engines from 2006 and earlier. Following this logic, a model year for engines becomes obsolete every three years. To predict when your engine will go out of date, take the difference between the model year of your engine and 2009, then multiply it by three to find the estimated allowed life within California, then add it to the model year to find the date of its retirement.
For example, if you were to purchase an engine with a 2015 model, it would likely expire around 2033. The way CARB pushes the rule forward favors new engines; a 2022 engine would expire in 2061.
Conclusion
If your truck is registered within the Golden State, it may be the time to either retrofit the engine or get a newer model of truck altogether. If you opt for the latter, TopMark Funding can certainly help you get the funding you need to make the transition. Read on below for more information.
