FMCSA Issues Safety Funding to All Fifty States
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced on June 3rd 2024 that it will be providing $480 million in grant funding to promote vehicular safety, including commercial vehicles, to fifty-six different regions in America.
Details
The recently announced Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program grant awards are the latest implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, signed into law in 2021, and will give almost half of one billion dollars to various projects promising to reduce traffic fatalities, in pursuit of zero traffic deaths.
The regions naturally include all fifty states, but also include:
- District of Columbia
- American Samoa
- Guam
- Northern Marina Islands
- Puerto Rico
- Virgin Islands
“Across the entire country, we are making our roadways safer and strengthening our national supply chains with resources made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in the announcement of this new round of spending. “The funding we’re announcing today will help our local safety partners invest in initiatives that will continue this important work and make our roadways safer.”
Just a few examples of acceptable uses of grant money include:
- Safety inspections for trucks and buses.
- General education on road safety, such as warnings against drunk, distracted, and tired driving.
- Safety audits of commercial companies.
“The number of fatalities on our nation’s roadways involving commercial motor vehicles decreased by an estimated eight percent from 2022 to 2023. We know the needle is moving in the right direction,” said Acting FMCSA Deputy Director Sue Lawless, “but until we reach zero roadway deaths, there will always be more work to do. These grants help fund that work.”
Conclusion
Traffic fatalities peaked in the United States during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when fewer vehicles on the road, ironically, caused more collisions on the road as those still still driving were significantly less careful as a result. While zero traffic deaths is a nearly impossible goal due to fringe cases, consistently decreasing the amount by a sizable percentage each year is a fantastic start. Hopefully this funding will be put to good use in mitigating preventable accidents.
