Indiana to Spend $600 Million on Truck Parking Spots
Very recently, we wrote about the increased enforcement against illegal truck parking in Greenwood, Indiana, wherein we said:
“With some forms of government working to alleviate the problem of truck parking (such as Arizona) and others (like Greenwood) fighting only the symptoms, it will be interesting to see how things turn out in the years to come.”
How interesting it is then that news has come out that is a combination of the two: Arizona’s policy in the state of Indiana.
Details
Indiana’s Department of Transportation (IDOT) has unveiled a plan to spend ten years and $600 million in improving and expanding 21 rest areas/welcome centers across the Hoosier State. With the areas serving 1,400 parking spots and Indiana hoping to increase that by about 79%, the finished number of available commercial parking spaces for anyone to use will total 2,500.
Details are relatively sparse, but it is safe to assume that these expansions and renovations will expand beyond simply parking spaces, meaning that IDOT is not just simply paying over half a million dollars per space and calling it a day.
As mentioned before, details are currently hard to come by, but it is highly likely that some of the funding for this project will come through the federal government through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2022.
Conclusion
We reported on the first leg of the journey at the end of October, with the expansion of the Kanakee Welcome Center. Now that IDOT has formally stated its plan for the next decade, there are only 20 more spots left to go!
This news comes at an impeccable time when the United States is experiencing something of a truck parking crisis; with about ten commercial big rigs for every legal parking space, truckers are often parking in illegal and unsafe circumstances that make the job needlessly more dangerous. It is nice to see states such as Arizona and Indiana stepping up to help alleviate this problem for all truckers passing through, and we hope to see even more states follow in their footsteps.
