Hyundai to Bring Fuel Cell Trucks to United States Market
The race for green energy trucking is a worldwide phenomenon, and South Korean manufacturing company Hyundai is one of the global contenders that is now hoping to get its foot in the door within the United States market with its new fuel cell trucks.

On Tuesday, May 2nd, Hyundai Motor Company announced that it would be bringing its XCIENT model of hydrogen fuel cell trucks to the United States. During that same week, the XCIENT was displayed to trucking industry stakeholders, environmental regulators, and tech enthusiasts during the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Anaheim, California.
After showing potential in Hyundai’s home country of South Korea, as well as in Switzerland, Hyundai is hoping to beat other companies to the punch by being one of the first competitors in the hydrogen fuel cell market to reach the states.
The Class 8 fuel cell tractor offers up to 450 miles of range while also being refilled in only thirty minutes. This is not quite as fast as diesel, but is a far cry from electric charging which can take hours at even the fastest current rates. This range is 80% more than comparable models in europe, due to the sheer size of the landmass of the United States, and is made possible through additional hydrogen storage tanks included in the planned United States model of the XCIENT.
Currently, the XCIENT model comes in cabover form only. It is currently unknown as to whether or not Hyundai will make the switch to a conventional design to appeal to the American fleet.
Conclusion
Currently, Hyundai Motor Company plans to have these trucks hit the road within U.S. borders by the end of 2024. Provided that it follows this timeline and does not extend further into the future (as is the case with green trucks in the past), it will be one of the first to provide hydrogen fuel cell fleets to its customers.
