Trucking Jobs Inch Upward for April 2023
The trucking industry seems to have no end in sight to its momentum, as it continues to climb to greater and greater heights with each passing month. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ numbers for the last three months are below.
April 2023 Details
- The initial estimate for April is 1,612,500.
- The first revision for March has the employee count at 1,609,500. This is a drop of 2,500 from the last estimate.
- The final number for February is 1,606,300. This is the same number from its previous estimation, but is now set in stone.
This data reveals a lot of interesting details. With the first March numbers being 1,612,000 employees, the jump to April may seem like a paltry 500 at the first glance, but with revisions it is instead an increase that is quintuple that amount.
Beyond the employment numbers itself, we also like to keep track of the average hours worked for truckers and the average wage, which is always a month behind the employment counts. For March, truckers averaged 40.7 hours per week and $28.74 per hour, at least according to preliminary data. In comparing the preliminary data of March to that of February, truckers got a slight pay cut dropping from $1,200.18 to $1,168.72 per week. While it would be easy to explain this away as a correlation to the increased number of truckers in the workforce, the percentage increase month-to-month does not match the change in weekly pay. With this data being preliminary, however, we will have to see next month what the final pay numbers are (February’s weekly pay increased a little over two dollars in the transition from preliminary to final numbers).
Conclusion
With the slow season now behind the trucking industry, things are looking primed for the industry to become stronger than it ever was. We look forward to seeing what June’s numbers for May bring to the table.
