Derek Barrs Considered for FMCSA Administrator Position
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) saga continues, with the previous update to this being Adrienne Camire leaving the FMCSA without a trace.
The 47th president has wasted no time finding the next FMCSA Acting Administrator, however, and has tapped a man by the name of Derek Barrs for the position.
Details
The role of FMCSA Administrator has been experiencing severe turnover these past few years, an issue that goes far beyond partisanship and the Trump Administration. To Wiley Deck and Meera Joshi, there have been about eight Administrators in the past eight or so years.
Derek Barrs, a former Florida Highway Patrol chief, is the latest hope to break that cycle.
His consideration was approved by American Trucking Associations’ CEO and President Chris Spear.
“With nearly two decades of experience in law enforcement and the commercial motor vehicle industry, Derek Barrs’ career has been defined by his emphasis on making our roads safer for all motorists. He has a proven track record of strengthening ties between the trucking industry and public safety officers to address top transportation challenges such as drug impairment, cargo theft, and human trafficking. … Under his leadership, the trucking industry is confident that FMCSA will make significant progress towards achieving our shared priorities of improving highway safety and efficiently delivering the nation’s freight.”
Spear also has some experience in working with Barrs: he was a member of American Trucking Associations’ Law Enforcement Advisory Board in 2021. Additionally, he also served as president of the Associate Members group for the Commercial Safety Vehicle Alliance.
Conclusion
With this change of gears, the FMCSA finds itself in the exact same spot it did at the start of March 2025; it has an Acting Administrator that is allowed to act as a stopgap to make sure that commercial drivers are operating on the road safely at the present time, but Derek Barrs still needs to go through the entire Senate confirmation process in order to become official, just as Andrienne Camire would have had to before her departure. Time will tell what happens next.
