Delaware Northbound I-95 Off Limits to Truckers
Truckers heading north on one of America’s most populous interstate highways may find themselves out of luck for the foreseeable future, as the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announced on September 21st that tractor-trailers are barred from using the northbound lanes through a construction zone in Wilmington.
Details
The announcement comes as a reaction from observing approximately twenty accidents in the construction zone involving big rigs since the project started in February.
“While the tractor-trailer operators are not always at fault in these incidents, these crashes have shut down the roadway for lengthy periods of time and this is an additional step we are taking to increase safety in the construction zone,” Transportation Secretary Nicole Majeski said in regards to the announcement.
Truckers heading southbound are not required to avoid the I-95, however, they are still encouraged to detour to nearby I-495 while passing through the Wilmington area. Truckers heading north may be subject to penalties such as fines.
It is unknown how long the construction project will last, as DelDOT hopes to repair 19 different bridges, presumably to prevent complete closures, as well as the roadway and ramps. The lowest estimate is a year, minimum.
Conclusion
Notice how Nicole Majeski says that the operators of the truck are not always at fault. It seems as though DelDOT is taking the easy solution by just banning heavier vehicles, even though there are higher standards to getting a Commercial Driver’s License over a standard driving license. A better explanation DelDOT could have used was that bridges under repair having questionable integrity for heavier vehicles, rather than throwing commercial drivers under the bus.
