CVSA Brake Inspection Day 2023 Results
Usually when there is a Brake Safety Day coming up from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), there is ample time of warning for when it is going to occur. Not this time! To make sure drivers are keeping their vehicles in shape at all times, the CVSA has decided to shake things up by not only having a surprise Brake Safety Day, but also by giving no warning of it. Here is what was found from inspecting 6,829 commercial motor vehicles in a single day.
Results
- 11.3% of all vehicles inspected were placed out-of-service. This approximates to 772.
- Inspectors found 928 different brake violations. With it being larger than the total out-of-service placements, this means some vehicles had two or more brake violations.
- Beyond brakes, inspectors also found 108 power unit violations and 87 towed unit lining or pad violations.
- While inspections happened in all three North American countries, the United States was by far the most common place for inspection, with 5,901 of the inspections taking place in the 49 states connected to the continent.
- Last year’s results were a 13.3% out-of-service rate, meaning that trucks have been more properly maintained in the eight months between events. Roughly five times as many trucks were inspected during the surprise Brake Safety Day of 2022.
Conclusion
We wrote about the surprise Brake Safety Day in November; this was it.
The usual Brake Safety Day that happens about two-thirds of the way through August is still expected to happen. If your truck(s) got lucky and managed to avoid inspection, it may be a good idea to get them inspected and maintained now before that time comes.
The next event the CVSA is holding (that we know of) is Operation Safe Driver Week, which will be from July 9th to the 15th. We advise that you mark your calendars and drive extra carefully when you go out on the road during that time, even more carefully than you do normally, as there will be extra eyes watching commercial motor vehicles all across the continent.
