Chris Spear Speaks at Tech Conference
If you have been following news regarding the trucking industry for a while, there is a pretty good chance you are familiar with the name “Chris Spear.” The president of the American Trucking Association (ATA), which has a membership of 50 state trucking associations, is a relatively big player within the space.
So when he spoke at the 2025 Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition, people were listening to what he had to say.
Details
So what did Chris Spear say at the conference that was of importance? He admitted that the trucking industry is in its most tumultuous time since the dog days of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that there is still plenty of reason to remain optimistic. Namely, the shifting of gears in the federal government with the return of the Trump Administration.
“This is a different agenda and direction our federal government is taking. Love it or hate it, it’s impactful. It’s impactful on us. We are the heartbeat of our nation’s economy.
We’re not quick to dismiss the importance that we have, and all the reasons that this president is now back at the White House.
It’s the economy, it’s kitchen table economics, it’s our ability to reduce inflation, to streamline supply chain, to ensure that our industry continues to play an invaluable role.”
When speaking about the Trump Administration, he voiced his full support in the rolling back of emission regulations, saying “…this is not the United States of California.” However, with the talk of tariffs, he sung a different tune.
“We’re moving 76% of the freight [between the United States, Mexico, and Canada]. So just these small adjustments are going to have an immediate impact on the trucking industry.”
We at Topmark Funding have talked about some of the potential positive impacts of tariffs for the trucking industry, so we will have to see if domestic production ramps up in direct response to the trade war.
Conclusion
Chris Spear feels that the trucking industry is still in a prime position to keep on rolling, and based on what we have seen in the previous five years between the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain woes (which the trucking industry is paramount for repairing), and unstable inflation, we are inclined to believe him. Trucking has been around for over 100 years; it is going to have to take a lot more than current events to stop it from moving.
