Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act Introduced to 119th Congress
About once every congressional term, the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act finds its way into the chambers of Congress where it is voted upon. We wrote about it during the 117th Congress and the 118th, and here it is again, attempting once again to become law.
Details
On February 27th, Representative Mike Bost reintroduced the Bill to the floor of the House of Representatives.
“I grew up in a family trucking business,” the Illinois Republican said in reintroducing the bill. “I know firsthand how difficult, and oftentimes dangerous, it can be when America’s truckers are forced to push that extra mile in search of a safe place to park. By expanding access to parking options for truckers, we are making our roads safer for all commuters and ensuring that goods and supplies are shipped to market in the most efficient way possible. This is a matter of public safety for everyone, and I’m committed to doing all I can to drive this legislation over the finish line.”
The short version of the Bill is that it allocates $755 million in federal funding for establishing new parking spaces for trucks. While land acquisition and the placing of parking spaces is generally expensive, they have low maintenance costs and, given how many truckers there are on the road compared to parking spots, are likely to be in use at least 20 hours each day.
Conclusion
The final question that remains is how much of a chance it has in becoming law this time, as opposed to the previous two attempts. In 2022 the Democratic Party commanded the political trifecta (House, Senate, Presidency) and in 2024 the House switched to Republican.
This time around, the Republicans control all three sections. While they tend to err on the side of fiscal responsibility, infrastructure and business tend to be a large position for the GOP, with a majority of employees in the trucking industry leaning towards the political right and increased commerce leading to a return on investment.
The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act has its best chances of becoming law in the 119th Congress than it ever has before. Hopefully, the third time will be the charm!
