FEMA Opens Service Applications to Truck Fleets
A hurricane hits North Carolina. A wildfire spreads through southern California. Now that the damage is done, it is time for recovery, something with which the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is all too familiar.
To decrease support times in future emergencies that will invariably happen, FEMA is opening itself up to contracts to trucking fleets to deliver necessary goods.
Details
FEMA does an onboarding process for every year. For 2025, ranging from July 1st 2025 to June 30th 2026, interested trucking fleets have until March 28th to submit all of the relevant paperwork on their website. To help streamline the process, the folks at sam.gov and the U.S. General Services Administration have created a checklist for all of the things a fleet will need in order to work with the largest consumer of goods and services in the world. For a brief list of examples:
- Maintaining a minimum of $300K worth in cargo insurance.
- Liability insurance as required by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
- Specific liability insurance for transporting hazardous cargo if hauling such material.
- Maintaining a physical office and an authorized representative within the United States or its territories.
- Taxpayer Identification Number and IRS Consent Form.
- Number of employees working in the business entity.
- Money to cover any and all fees, depending on which method the business applies (with the help of a third party or by itself)
Conclusion
Because a service year runs from the middle of one year to the next, the odds that current events sweeping the nation will be applicable by the start of the next service year are slim, and applications are for future, unprecedented emergencies, as most emergencies are.
If you still have interest in participating in shipments for various situations without working on contracts with FEMA, state governments and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will often offer temporary Declarations that allow a driver some limited exemptions for hauling goods related to the cause, on a case-by-case basis.
All of this is to say that when it comes to disasters, there are more than just ambulances and fire trucks that react, but those who bring blankets and water bottles to those displaced by the resulting fallout. That is where truckers drive up on the scene.
