ATRI Wants Data Regarding Cost Per Mile in Trucking
Avid readers may remember when we talked about the average cost per mile of operating a truck according to American Transportation Research Institute’s (ATRI) data from 2023. In the article, we mentioned how your mileage may vary (literally):
“Of course, as with all averages, one size does not fit all. Truckers who work primarily in California are likely to pay more in fuel prices than those in Georgia. Another example is paying more than the listed 72.4 centers per mile for a trucker in order to attract top talent.”
Now is your chance to contribute and help make the numbers better fit your own personal scenario.
Details
ATRI wants to find the cost per mile of operating a truck in 2024, in part to compare it to 2023 and in part to give drivers more up-to-date data on the projected costs of operating within the industry.
You can take the survey either online or print it out and mail it in, but you will find it on the ATRI cost-per-mile survey webpage.
The survey has 31 questions in total but a majority of them are optional, so if you only have ten minutes to spare or do not want to divulge specific information, you can skip questions where you please. The two biggest questions are how many miles you/your fleet drove in 2023, and then dividing the annual costs in various categories by that number of miles:
- Repair
- Tires
- Fuel
- Insurance
- Truck and trailer purchases and leases
- Tolls
- Permits
- Trucker pay (per mile or per hour)
- Other (food stipends for drivers being one such example)
Conclusion
ATRI is allowing drivers until April 24th, 2024 to answer, afterward likely publishing the data at around the same time that they did in 2023, which is around the start of July.
We think this data is valuable for drivers, for those who contribute, and those who do not alike. While we are not affiliated with ATRI in any way, we at TopMark Funding are excited to see what the results of this survey will be.
