American Transportation Research Institute Wants Your Opinion
It is that time of year again. Do you love telling people your opinion? If you do, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) wants to know what your greatest priorities are regarding current trends within the trucking industry.

The survey can be found on the ATRI’s survey webpage. For its methodology, the survey gives you twenty-eight different options, and you are asked to rank your top three. First priority gets three points, second two, third one, and the rest get zero. The survey also asks for what you believe are the best courses of action for resolving these three high-priority items. All twenty-eight trends then have their total points from all survey takers added up to obtain the final result, but are also shown as separated by truck drivers versus motor carriers.
For drivers, here are the top eleven 2021 results, as number one was a tie.
- Driver compensation and truck parking
- Detention/Delay at customers facilities
- Fuel prices
- Driver training standards
- Hours of service rules
- ELD mandate
- Driver distraction
- Transportation infrastructure/congestion/funding
- Speed limiters
- Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)
All eleven of these return for the 2022 survey, as well as ones that did not make the cut for 2021, such as automated truck technology and zero-emission trucks. Additionally, if you feel there is something missing, you can write it in with hopes that it will be added next year. The survey can be taken anonymously, but if you want a free copy of the final results sent to you, you can provide them with your email address.
Conclusion
The survey will be open until October 7th, and the results will be revealed on October 22nd at the ATA’s Management Conference & Exhibition.
It will certainly be interesting to see how the list of concerns changes this year when compared to 2021. Fuel prices on average have been higher this year than last but have since released quite a bit of steam. Additionally, there have been reports of higher wages for truck drivers while truck parking has, if anything, only become worse over time. We predict that the truck parking problem will reign supreme this year.
The ATRI has the ability to create studies that influence Congress and the government. Whatever your concerns may be, this could be an easy, ten-minute way to have your voice heard on a national level.
