Trailer Sales: June 2022 Update and July 2022
The trucking industry is always changing, and the research organizations are always revising their numbers. As such, we wanted to give you an update not only for July’s sales numbers, but also a change to what happened in June.
June Numbers Increase
In a previous article we reported that trailer sales for June 2022 were around 14,400. These were the preliminary numbers from FTR. While the preliminary numbers tend to be fairly accurate to what the trailer sales are for the month as more information is gathered, that was not the case this time.
FTR puts the final number for June at approximately a whopping 23,444 units, while ACT Research says 25,444. It is hard to say what the cause of this discrepancy is, perhaps a major manufacturer failed to report their orders initially. Whatever the case, the trailer sales were much better than originally stated.
With that in mind, here are July’s numbers.
July 2022 Trailer Sales
FTR states that the preliminary number of trailer orders for July 2022 is 17,000. This is a decrease from the final count for June by around 28%, but more than double the number ordered in July 2021.
As stated earlier, the preliminary numbers are usually accurate, so we have reason to believe that FTR is within a stone’s throw of the actual number of trailer orders for July regardless of whatever may have happened in June.
FTR’s Charles Roth continues to repeat what has been said for many months before: the backlog is a strong indicator of sales yet to come. “Amidst these uncertainties and production challenges, OEMs have continued to strategically manage backlog levels and maintain strong build rates. Under these conditions, order volumes are likely to improve in Q4 as OEMs begin filling their production schedules for 2023.”
Conclusion
With trailer sales being higher than they were at the same time last year, the trucking industry continues to show strength in surviving whatever is thrown at it. When supply chain shortages finally end and the backlog can finally be fulfilled, we expect to see a skyrocket scenario similar to what we saw in the later half of 2020.
