NYC Mayor Cracks Down on Truck Parking
Any trucker who has been on the road for longer than a week knows that it is hard to find dedicated parking to put the truck for a night. Oftentimes a trucker will have to make due with covering multiple spots intended for four-wheelers or a long stretch of curb in residential areas.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams knows about this problem, and is pulling trucker’s feet to the fire in order to get them to stop.
Details
On August 22nd, Mayor Adams announced an initiative to increase enforcement against illegal truck parking.
For far too long, large commercial vehicles have been parking illegally in this neighborhood, disrupting daily life and contributing to noise, traffic and pollution. We cannot let our neighborhood streets turn into illegal parking lots,” Adams said in the statement.
The Daily News reports that this announcement is a public statement about what has already been done. Since August 15th, agents in Jamaica, Springfield Gardens, and Queens Village have provided to truckers:
- 597 summonses.
- 89 boots.
- 55 truck tows.
With New York city being the most populous city in the nation, it directly has the highest demand for shipped goods in the nation. With this increased enforcement, truckers are being told to get out of city limits as soon as a delivery is done.
Conclusion
While Mayor Adams did not offer a solution for truckers hoping to spend the night at the Big Apple, he claims the city is working on implementing legal parking for truck drivers. Until that happens, truckers are advised to plan around finding a place to park for the night before entering city limits to avoid fines and other punishments.
This is not the first time that a major city has implemented stronger standards for truck drivers. Just a little over a year ago, Minneapolis implemented a similar policy to get truck drivers out of the suburbs.
Truck parking has been an issue for the nation for many years now, and while these moves by local governments resolve the symptoms of the problem, it does not address the underlying cause. We hope that New York City implements a system for legal parking for truck drivers soon.
