Georgia Lawmakers Suspend Fuel Tax for 60 Days
The fight in Iran has caused fuel prices at home to go up quite a bit, and to that end the lawmakers over at the Peach State are doing what they can to temporarily relieve the pain for drivers and truckers traveling through its borders.
Details
The state legislature pushed a Bill through to Governor Brian Kemp’s desk, which was signed March 20th and suspends taxes on gasoline and diesel until around May 19th. Currently the tax on gasoline is 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon of diesel fuel.
“Today’s suspension of the state gas tax enabled by House Bill 1199 will save hardworking Georgians and the truckers who keep our state moving nearly $400 million over the next 60 days,” said Speaker Jon Burns. “Whether it’s the immediate relief for millions of businesses, drivers, and citizens in House Bill 1199, the income tax rebates enabled by House Bill 1000, or the property tax relief grants in the Amended 2026 Budget, here in Georgia, we aren’t just talking about addressing affordability, we’re delivering results.”
With gasoline at an average of $3.942 and diesel at $5.250, this provides drivers with some much-needed relief. The averages in Georgia are below the nation, at $3.695 and $5.179 respectively, so these temporary stops on taxes should cause the price to drop somewhat. Whether or not it will be a 1:1 drop in price for the fuel excise tax is yet to be seen.
Conclusion
With how quickly the Georgia state legislature was able to get this law through the works and made official, it raises the question as to whether other states will follow suit. An interesting solution to keep prices stable might be to fluctuate the excise taxes depending on the current base prices, providing more or less tax revenue that is supposed to go to road repair based upon the need for cheaper fuel.
Perhaps one day the federal government will be able to do the same for the Federal Excise Tax on newer vehicles. One can dream.
