2022 Reservations Mean Truck Sales for August 2021
With Original Equipment Manufacturers now allowing orders for deliveries set in 2022, the floodgates have opened. August 2021 was one of the best months of the year for Class 8 truck orders.

FTR has the net number estimated at 39,400. ACT estimates orders at 36,900. Whatever the actual number is, both research companies are confident that the total is higher than both July 2021 and August 2020, which is astounding considering how truck sales made a quick rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. As an average, both say it was a 50 percent increase month-over-month and 90 percent increase year-over-year.
“Ordering has commenced for 2022 deliveries, but at a much more measured pace than expected,” says Don Ake, our personal favorite executive over at FTR. “Fleets have wanted to place their 2022 orders for months. They are in desperate need of trucks presently and with the freight market being so robust, anticipate that build slots will again be scarce next year. OEMs, on the other hand, have been reluctant to open their order boards due to high commodity prices and supply chain uncertainties.”
Conclusion
Don Ake has been saying for months that a component shortage is going to hit truck sales like, well, a truck. If his prediction is set to be true, 2022 is going to be quite the year for trucks as companies scramble to get whatever they can while supplies dwindle.
