Zero Emission Heavy-Duty Truck Sales Exploded in 2023
With all the constant news in the trucking industry regarding Class 8 trucks that have zero direct emissions–whether that be hydrogen or electric energy, you would think that the road would be filled to the brim with these types of vehicles and diesel fuel would have gone the way of the horse and carriage.
The truth is that the technology is so emergent that convincing fleets to make the transition, especially with such a smaller network of fueling stations, is going to take a while. If things continue to go the way they are going, however, that will not be long, as studies have shown a 250% increase in the first six months of 2023.

The numbers come from CALSTART, a non-profit not to be confused with the California Air Resources Board. The total number of these cleaner heavy-duty vehicles currently operating on the road is a paltry 867 as of June 2023, but compared to January 2023, it is a whopping increase of 250%.
No doubt one of the leading contributors to this stark increase is the Tesla Semi, with Tesla vehicles having an aura of status about them, it is likely they will continue to sell.
The current number of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks is a small amount, considering there are approximately 3 million of them on the road. Still, if the number were to continue to grow by 20 percent every year, a conservative estimate considering its current annual growth rate is 625% (250% per half-year), it would replace diesel in 30 years. If it stays at 625% it will be fewer than five years.
