U.S. Ports Experience Strong 2025 Start
The start of a new presidential term has led to many talks of tariffs, but it did not do much to stymie the flow of goods during the first month of 2025, as ports across the nation reported record levels of shipments.
Details
January is, relatively speaking, a slow month for port activity. With the holiday season finished, demand for consumer goods tends to plummet. With that in mind, a year-over-year comparison is more apt when looking at January numbers.
With that in mind, comparing January 2024 to January 2025 showed this data for numerous ports within the country:
- Port of Los Angeles: 855,652 containers processed to 942,245, an increase of 8%.
- Port of Long Beach: 674,015 to 952,733, a 41% increase.
- Seattle and Tacoma combined (Northwest Seaport Alliance): 211,283 to 264,869, a 25% increase.
- Port Houston: 332,961 to 356,407, a 7% increase.
This increase in activity is expected to have a trickle-down effect on the trucking industry. After all, even if railroads took 100% of these shipments and moved them further into the country, railroads are not very flexible in travel routes–the final miles will have to be done by truck.
It’s encouraging to start off the year so strongly,” Mario Cordero, Port of Long Beach CEO said in a statement regarding the numbers. “We will continue to focus on enhancing both our competitiveness and sustainability, no matter the uncertainties in the supply chain.”
Conclusion
When it comes to talks about tariffs, some of which are now underway by the time you read this article, the two largest countries impacted are Mexico and Canada, which seldom transport their goods overseas and instead travel through the borders.
As a result, it is expected that port activity when dealing with overseas countries such as those in Europe and Asia will continue to show a trend of growth when comparing year-over-year.
Ultimately, time will have to tell, but we hope that if business continues to boom at the nation’s ports that they will be revamped to handle more trucks for hauling instead of keeping truckers waiting!
