Trucking Jobs Leap in May 2022

The trucking industry continues its winning streak, with another month of all-time high employment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has the numbers.

May 2022 Numbers

• The initial posting for May 2022 is 1,581,300.
• The revised count for April 2022 is 1,568,000. This is an increase of 3,900 jobs.
• March 2022’s final number is 1,554,000. From the last estimate, it is 2,900 more.

This data shows that the trucking industry has all but completely recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. While the industry is suffering from global supply chain shortages that limit the production of trucks and trailers, it is doing a good job of slowly but surely putting warm bodies in driver’s seats across the nation, as well as auxiliary jobs such as diesel mechanics.

The trucking industry did feel a little bump from the slow season, dropping off almost 3,000 jobs from February to March, but the preliminary data indicates that the industry has long since shrugged that off. The evidence is even stronger when considering the BLS has a tendency to understate job counts in their preliminary estimates, not overstate them.

When going from March to April, the BLS currently estimates that the number of production/nonsupervisory employees has jumped 16,100. This is larger than the 14,000 total jump, indicating that the trucking business structure is becoming less vertical and is focusing more on the actual work to be done rather than middle managers.

As an aside, the BLS estimates that the wages truckers are earning are also going up, increasing from almost $28 per hour at the start of the year to $28.74 as of April.

Conclusion

With trucking employment at an all-time high, it is only a matter of time before the industry breaks a new milestone with 1,600,000 total employees. Based on current projections, we predict it will be by July 2022, though we would like to be proven wrong and have it happen by the end of June. More trucks on the road means a stronger economy for everyone.
