Trucking Jobs Increase in December 2022
The trucking industry has been hard at work these last few months due to the holiday season. As a direct result, fleets were scrambling to get more bodies into their trucks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has the numbers.
December 2022 Numbers
- December 2022’s preliminary estimate stands at 1,601,500. This is either the third or fourth time that the initial estimate has passed the 1.6 million employment milestone. Will this be the time that it sticks?
- The first revision for November 2022 1,599,400. The count decreased by 1,900.
- October 2022’s final number is 1,598,800. 1,200 lower than the previous estimate, 2,300 below the first.
The obvious culprit for record-high employment numbers in the trucking industry is the holiday season. With Cyber Monday being the biggest day for holiday shopping since the creation of the Internet, it is hardly a surprise that fleets, whether interstate or last-mile shipping, increased to match the rising demand.
The true test of the trucking industry’s meddle will be what is to come: the slow season. Generally speaking, employment numbers during these next three months increase, but at a slow rate. As long as the nation’s economy continues to heal and we do not have another global event, this is what we expect to happen in 2023.
Beyond employment numbers, truckers were working fewer hours (42.2 to 41.7 per week) and earnings more pay per hour ($28.21 to $28.54) in November than in October, although on average they were grossing less income ($1,190.46 to $1,190.12). Still, an average pay cut of thirty-four cents for thirty minutes less work seems like a worthy trade-off to us!
Conclusion
The slow season is a time for preparation rather than for work. Chances are 2023 will be the biggest year for trucking yet, so now is the time to work on the business end of things and do what you need to become successful in the year to come.
