Trucking Employment Levels Off in June 2023

Another month has gone by, and as such the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has updated its number regarding employment in NAICS 484 (transportation). Here are those updated numbers.

June 2023 Employment Data

• The first June 2023 estimate says 1,609,700.
• The revised number for May 2023 is now 1,609,900, an increase of 700 from the first.
• The final number for April 2023 is 1,608,700, an increase of 100 from the previous estimation.

Another interesting phenomenon worth pointing out is that the number of “production and nonsupervisory employees” jumped more than 18,000 in the transition from April to May, despite the current estimated job growth to be only a little more than one thousand.

The arrival of June employment numbers also brings the arrival of May work hours and wages. While the number is lower than it was for April, the amount per hour decrease was much lower than the hours per week decrease, meaning that truckers arguably got a better deal. $30.71 per hour for 40.1 hours of work comes out to an average paycheck of $1,231.47, compared to the month before with the numbers being $30.74, 40.2, and $1,235.748, respectively.

Conclusion

Although the numbers regarding recent employment have shown evidence of stagnation, we are still confident that the trucking industry will continue to roll on with more vigor than ever before. We are slowly but surely approaching the holiday season, where the largest gains in trucking employment, both temporarily and permanently, are seen. Plus, despite a slight drop of 200 jobs in June, the trucking industry continues to hover around its all-time peak employment.
