Truck Parking Funding Act Passes Committee
We at TopMark Funding love a good truck parking story, and here is the latest one: The House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure passed on May 23rd a bill called the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act that will enable $755 million in funding for the foundation of more public truck parking spots across the country.
The Political Process
As a quick recap, for the Bill to become law it needs to:
- Pass its Committee.
- Get a simple majority in the House.
- Get a simple majority in the Senate.
- Be signed by the president, or, if it is vetoed by the president:
- Must pass with a super majority in both House and Senate.
The process is currently done with step one, but this is not the first time it has gone through the political process. The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act died back in early 2020 before a certain pandemic ravaged the world. We have reason to believe it will make it to step four, if not become law, this time.
The reason for this is simple: politically, the community of truckers leans towards the right of the political spectrum, and with the House of Representatives currently under control of Republicans while also holding a plurality in the Senate, it is likely that it will pass both wings of Congress.
After that, it ultimately comes down to whether Joe Biden signs or vetoes it. If he vetoes it, it will likely die there, but there is still a plausible chance that he will sign it to win votes with the trucker voting base in the upcoming 2024 election.
Conclusion
While the fight to get adequate parking spaces for commercial drivers is sure to manifest in numerous forms, federal funding may be the single best weapon the industry has, provided that it passes into law.
A trucker can show support for the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act by calling his or her Representative and Senators. With experts estimating that the trucking industry currently only has approximately 30% of the needed parking spaces needed to operate efficiently, it will certainly be an uphill battle.
