Trailer Sales Follow Truck Sales for May 2021
There appears to be a strong connection between the number of Class 8 trucks sold in a given month and the number of trailers ordered. A statistical analysis of this may make for a good article on an otherwise slow news day, but for now we will focus on the trailer sales for May 2021. As you could probably guess from the title of this article and from reading a previous article, trailer sales are down from April.
The Numbers
ACT Research pins the preliminary number of net trailers sold for the month at 8,800. Following in truck sales’ footsteps, this is a 39% decrease from April 2021 but a massive jump of around 170% compared to May 2020.
It probably does not take an expert in the trucking industry to understand why truck and trailer sales would be better now than they were a year ago; May 2020 was the second-worst month for the coronavirus pandemic, with many different lockdown orders still in full effect.
Conclusion
The final number from ACT Research may change from now to the end of June, but with the preliminaries usually within a 5% margin of error, it is extremely unlikely that ultimate trailer sales will be higher than April 2021 or lower than May 2020.
June 2020 was the first month of the pandemic where sales for both trucks and trailers were higher than the month before. With worries of a looming supply shortage possibly impeding production, it is a coin flip as to whether or not sales will beat June of last year.
