Seven More States Declare Winter Emergency
This January appears to be one for the record books.
We wrote about last week how eleven different states had States of Emergency as a result of extreme winter weather. Well, it appears that the season is not slowing down any time soon, as seven more states have joined in on the Declarations.
Details
There are seven new members of the club:
In addition, two of the previous states have added additional Declarations regarding the State of Emergency:
- Mississippi
- This Declaration is specifically tailored towards truckers, providing an explicit waiver to the Hours of Service regulations.
- Tennessee
Each of the twenty different Declarations across eighteen states brings its own definition as to what is allowable during the time period. We advise that you pull out a map and determine where along your truck route this extreme winter weather may be applicable to you.
You probably will not have to try very hard, though, as these Declarations cover approximately 961 million acres, or about 40% of the United States by landmass!
Alaska skews the percentage to be lower, however, both due to its sheer size and because it considers this type of weather to be typical. Considering only the 48 contiguous United States, the coverage is closer to 49%.
Our advice to you if you are driving across any of these eighteen states is to be extremely careful. Weather conditions can vary from icy roads to torrential downpours to extreme cold that a driver would never want to be stranded within.
Conclusion
Additionally, in the last article, we talked about how California had a downpour around this same time in 2023, but things seemed to be dry this year on average. That is no longer the case, as San Diego received an entire month’s worth of rain in just one day recently.
The month after the holiday season is generally regarded as the slowest portion of the year for the trucking season, but with all the demand for emergency goods and the services of having them delivered to critical locations, business seems to be pretty good this time around, by January standards.
