Idaho to Enable Bulk Permit Renewal for Truckers
One of the most fun aspects of being a fleet owner is managing all the various types of permits that the business needs to be operating lawfully. To that extent, the Gem State is implementing a new system that will allow fleets to renew their permits all at the same time, saving time and money.

“Bulk renewal has greatly reduced the amount of pages customers need to click through when renewing online,” said Ellen Mattila, the Idaho Transportation Department public information officer said in a statement announcing the rollout of this new program.
If you are driving in the greater Idaho area, you can take advantage of this new program online at the Idaho Transportation Department’s permit website, where Mattila says each permit self-issued also saves the company in question $5 per permit.
“Annual permit renewals happen all year round. They are good for one calendar year and expire depending on when the permit was purchased originally. We can change the start and end date of the permits to align with others that the company or carrier may have,” Mattila continued in the statement. At the time of writing, there is no indication of an auto-renewal system that would streamline the entire process to make it fully automatic, but it is something we at TopMark Funding would certainly like to see!
The new system also provides more details for each permit provided, including but not limited to warnings 30 days before expiration.
Conclusion
With Idaho taking this step to make the regulatory work of truck fleets easier, it raises the question as to when other states and national bodies are going to follow suit. Perhaps there will one day be a national coalition website to apply for and renew all the permits the trucking company ever needs across all 50 states, similar to how the International Fuel Tax Agreement and United Carrier Registration work currently. Combine that with our idea for auto-renewal when every permit is due, and our joke at the start of the article about regulatory permit management being the most fun part of running a trucking enterprise no longer makes any sense due to how easy it will become.
