Senators Reveal REVEAL Act
A group of republican senators within Congress are suspicious of the Department of Energy and its system of calculations used to determine an electric vehicle’s miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). After all, if they have an agenda to push electric vehicles onto the American populace, would they not have a vested interest in making the numbers as high as possible? To that end, senators introduced the Recalculating Electric Vehicle Efficiency for Accuracy and Legitimacy (REVEAL) Act. Were it to pass, the Department of Energy would have to use calculations established by a different party.
Details
The Bill is sponsored by Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming.
“No administration should be able to rig efficiency calculations for electric cars,” he said, addressing the public on X. “The REVEAL Act would prevent the secretary of energy from using these faulty calculations to prohibit the sale of gas- or diesel-powered cars or trucks. This is a needed step to help fight against the Biden administration’s continued manipulation of the auto market and put Americans back in the driver’s seat.”
Other senators co-sponsoring the bill have also voiced their concerns regarding current calculations. “The benefits of EVs appear illusionary at best, and our bill forces this administration to be transparent by compelling the DOE to more accurately measure the relative efficiency of EVs so the Biden administration can no longer hide behind its unsubstantiated environmental platitudes,” said Cynthia Lummis, the other Senator from Wyoming.
Conclusion
While this is a noble endeavor done on behalf of drivers across the nation, we are sorry to report that it is essentially bread and circuses. Congress does not have enough votes on both wings to override a presidential veto from Joe Biden, so the REVEAL Act has a 99% chance of not becoming law this year.
The best chance the REVEAL Act has is for a change in presidential party as a result of the 2024 election, then, it could be reintroduced into the next Congress and signed into law. Until then, this is, unfortunately, a waste of taxpayer dollars in paying congressional salaries. It is no surprise that Congress currently has an 18% approval rating (as of June 18th, 2024).
