See the Reconstruction of I-95 in Real Time
There are numerous answers as to how long the repair of the I-95 bridge in Philadelphia will take, but the construction has begun. To help keep the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) accountable, they have set up a livestream of the construction project.
Details
The way YouTube is set up for live streaming is that it turns every twelve hours of footage or so into a video, meaning we cannot embed the live stream here. If you want to access it, you can click onto the PennDOT YouTube channel and click from there to find the live stream.
As of the time of writing, PennDOT is implementing barriers to divide the northbound and southbound sides of the highway.
The first step of the project is to mitigate the economic loss by creating a makeshift roadway for travelers. To do this, PennDOT is expected to use 15,000 cubic yards of a substance called ultra-lightweight foamed glass aggregate (UL-FGA), made of recycled glass and is known for being extremely light for its durability, making it a good backfill material for sensitive projects such as bridges that go over other roads. Once the temporary structure used for crossing is finished, PennDOT will start working on a permanent, more durable bridge.
Delivering the UL-FGA is expected to take 150 truckloads of deliveries, which means some quality work for some members of the trucking industry.
Conclusion
The road replacement is expected to take weeks at the very least, but could span into months. If it is the latter, having a makeshift bridge structure is a good idea to help mitigate the time loss for the thousands of vehicles that would otherwise travel across the bridge every day. As annoying as congestion is, it is significantly better than a detour spanning 43 miles.
As said in previous articles, though the I-95 bridge’s destruction was not caused by waning infrastructure, it can be used as an example for the impact on interstate commerce when part of a major roadway becomes unfit for driving. We hope that this bridge issue motivates numerous state transportation departments to take infrastructure reinvestment more seriously.
