Safe Driver Week 2022 Starts July 10th
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is notable for having special periods of time across the year to enforce safety in commercial big rigs. One such example is checking truck maintenance with the International Roadcheck, which passed last month. Another that they do focuses on the most dangerous component of them all, the driver behind the wheel, with Operation Safe Driver Week.
“This safe driving initiative and campaign focuses specifically on drivers’ actions – whether it’s something a driver did, like speeding, or something they didn’t do, such as not paying attention to the driving task,” said CVSA President Capt. John Broers. “This focus on drivers’ behaviors is our effort to identify and educate drivers who are operating dangerously on our roadways, with the goal of preventing crashes from occurring.”
Details
The main theme for this year is speeding. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic started and working from home became the norm for most people, roadways have been less congested than normal, and there is an incentive for drivers to speed, especially when paid by the mile.
Unfortunately, speed kills, and as such roads are actually less safe than they were with more vehicles on the road. The CVSA reports that despite the total number of crashes on roads decreasing by 22%, all fatal crashes increased 6.8%, with speed-related crashes increasing 17%. It does not take a mathematician to crunch the numbers and say that accidents, when they happen, are more deadly.
“The rising fatalities on our roadways are a national crisis; we cannot and must not accept these deaths as inevitable,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Conclusion
The event starts on July 10th and will run a week until the end of July 16th. During that time, law enforcement professionals from Canada, Mexico, and the United States will keep an eye open for professional drivers performing erratically.
Our advice to you is to be on your best behavior for that week. Not only will getting cited for speeding or driving without a seatbelt cost you money, the statistics compiled by the CVSA during this week may be used to influence future governmental policy, such as speed limiters. As always, remember to drive safe.
