Robin Hutcheson to Become New FMCSA Acting Administrator
The position of Acting Administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has been traded off like a hot potato for the past few years. Whether it is a change in leadership from the Department of Transportation or the resignation of the Administrator moving to greener pastures, the slot is having a hard time staying filled. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has named Meera Joshi’s successor to be Robin Hutcheson.
Details
Robin Hutcheson will be the fifth Acting Administrator in the last two years:
- Ray Martinez
- Jim Mullen
- James “Wiley” Deck
- Meera Joshi
- Robin Hutcheson
The most recent departure of Meera Joshi was for her to work back at New York City under the direction of its newest mayor.
For the past year, Hutcheson has worked as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Department of Transportation under Pete Buttigieg. With this lateral transfer, she will be taking a stronger focus on commercial vehicles rather than a holistic approach that includes 4-wheelers.
While her biography does not include trucking industry experience, it does include a lot of safety initiatives. She has worked as the Transportation Director for Salt Lake City, and was the Director of Public Works for Minneapolis. For Minneapolis, she has overseen projects from managing drinking water to the flow of traffic (she is not responsible for the commercial truck parking tax in Minneapolis, which was added during her tenure in the DOT).
As with prior Acting Administrators, American Trucking Associations President and CEO welcomes her to open arms.
“She assumes this position at a critical time, as the pandemic, natural disasters, workforce shortages, and other factors continue to challenge the freight economy in ways never seen before,” he said in an official statement.
We also wish Hutcheson the best in her work for the trucking industry, but with her work history closely paralleling that of Meera Joshi, it may only be a matter of time before another large city like San Francisco or Miami snaps her up for other transportation work. We will have to wait and see what happens next.
